More Evidence Of Religious Drug Addicts

Researchers at the University of Utah have done a study showing how the brain reacts to religious experiences. We have known for a while, or at least strongly suspected that the reward center in the brain becomes involved. Which means high doses of the natural feel good drug dopamine, manufactured by our own bodies becomes activated, accumulates in our reward center, and people experience euphoria, light headedness, and feelings of well being.

These researchers did the testing with fMRI imaging and subjected the participants to religious influences, and monitored the results. The reward center of the brain lit up like a Christmas tree in Times Square.

Damn despicable drug addicts! All of them!

The Cargo Cult Scientists Will Love This

Some actual scientists, not the cargo cult creationist “scientists,” (I’ll get to them in a minute or two) have proposed a testable theory (the article mentions it possibly can be tested  with more incoming data) that the speed of light may have been variable in our early universe. They believe, contrary to inflation*, that light in the early universe traveled significantly faster, and slowed to its current state as the universe thickened. By that I expect they mean the accumulation of dust, stars, supernova debri, all of that stuff that makes up the galaxies, nebulas, and other interstellar matter such as asteroids and comets. The mass of matter we can see and measure today.

It does make a fair bit of sense that most anything can travel faster through a less dense area than a more dense area. Anyone with a pail of water and some dirt can do a mud experiment with a stirring stick and quickly see that condensing matter slows things down. But we are talking about a long since held theory here. The big bang, inflation, and rapid expansion time line has been tested many times and the data keeps leaning towards this rationale being correct.

What this new idea is asserting, is during the period of inflation where matter had not started to condense yet, light was able to travel to the edges of the universe at a higher than light speed acceleration. I quote: “The varying speed of light theory suggests that the speed of light was much higher in the early universe, allowing the distant edges to be connected as the universe expanded. The speed of light would have then dropped in a predictable way as the density of the universe changed. This variability led the team to the prediction published today.”

Which is all fine and dandy, if new data can show this theory is correct then we will have some new insights to our universe and the physics underlying it all. It would be a big deal to throw Einsteins Theory of Relativity (lightspeed is constant) under the bus, but that remains to be seen.

Now how does all this tie in to the title of this post? I’m glad you were wondering 🙂 One of our creation “scientists” a Mr. Jason Lisle of the ICR (which should tell you all you need to know), his pet theory which mangles all known physics and cosmology in a deliberate fashion, is an attempt to call into question one of the biggest problems with creationist views. Which is time/age of the universe, and I’ll use Andomeda galaxy as an example. Andromeda is 2.5 million light years (MLY) distant, give or take a couple of years. Which means that light from Andromeda that we see today left the galaxy 2.5 MLY ago. We see it as it was 2.5 MLY in the past. This is a problem for YEC’s who sincerely believe, despite tons of data indicating otherwise, that the earth/universe is a mere 6000 years old.

So for creationists, time itself is a huge threat to their personal beliefs that must be called into question in order for them to be able to properly apply a good dose of cognitive dissonance to their personal reality, so they can maintain their beliefs with some degree of satisfactory stupidity. Enter Jason Lisle.

Lisle’s theory is that light travels at an infinite speed, until it reaches an observer, then it immediately drops to half light speed. This notion coupled with a huge dose of CD and wishful thinking magically disposes of their time problem. Except it doesn’t. It just makes them look more foolish.

But never let that get in the way of a good lie! You can bet even if this new theory gets shot down, or if it actually turns out to be right, or anything in between, creationists and their heralded creation “scientists” will jump at any opportunity to claim they are right and have been all along. Even when they aren’t even living in the same universe as the rest of us. Which at long last is the point I was trying to make  🙂

This is the article:

http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/newsandeventspggrp/imperialcollege/newssummary/news_24-11-2016-10-12-58

And this is a pretty good history and discussion of creationist “science.” Including Jason Lisle’s insipid dumbassery:

*Inflation. Inflation is the current cosmological theory that maintains directly after the big bang an enormous expansion of the universe happened very quickly, then it slowed down to what we see today. It is thought that inflation occured at faster than light speeds, meaning light wasn’t able to keep up with the edges of the expanding universe. This new theory as I understand it suggests that light was able to keep up with the expansion rate of inflation, meaning that light went right along for the ride. So I’m thinking even if this new idea gains traction it won’t alter the understanding of our universe all that much, only that Einsteins ToR, will have an asterisk added to it. Where light under certain special conditions can travel faster than normal. None of this however will make creation science a valid occupation.

Just for kicks:

It’s Turkey Day

Just a note to say I hope everyone enjoys the holiday. This is that time of year for being thankful and enjoying family. Which I know don’t always work so well together.

So suck it up, and get through it! Leaving as little fallout as possible, think of the children!  🙂

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Just so you know family is showing up here today, I need a list of possible bail donors, just in case…

Picture Day

Well what can I say? Just another Picture Day!

This is a wheel bug I caught crossing the porch. I looked this one up as I had no idea what it was. I would have called it a gear bug though. 🙂

This next one I still do not know what it is. I looked in my bug book and scoured the net for leaf mimics, as I’m pretty sure at least of that. But no luck with an identity. First an aerial view then the side to show the caterpillar-like segmented body. I found this little critter when I went out to bring in the hummingbird feeder to put more nectar in it.

This next one I was getting in the truck to go somewhere, I saw the robber fly sitting there when I opened the door. He didn’t go anywhere when I did, which prompted me to take a closer look. What I found was he is quite busy with a housefly he had caught. Look closely and you can see the probocis impaling the little fly. Mr. robber fly was too busy sucking him dry to be concerned with me opening the truck door or the taking of pictures.

Next up a brightly colored butterfly on the porch. I’ll have you know the doormat has since been swept.

The next three are all of the same timber rattlesnake. I found this one freshly dead on the road, on the way to the house where my wife works as a home health care nurse. The people who live there love rattlesnake. As this ones head was smooshed and the body was fine I packed it up and took it to them. Let me tell you, you haven’t lived until you have picked up a dead rattlesnake and the damn thing twitched! I knew it was dead, knew it couldn’t bite me, but I still jumped and damn near pissed myself when that thing did the dead critter jitter. As it was found:

Close up of the rattle, which I still have.

And stretched out on the guys shop floor:

This next one, what can I say? I was in the Wal Mart, walking down the aisle when I spotted this. We did not try them. Haven’t seen them again. Oddly enough I made biscuits and sausage gravy, from scratch, just this morning. It was good.

11-19-2016-024

This one, I made a trip to the dump, this sign was and still is stretched across the fence. See anything odd about it? Other than the fact you have to tell people not to go through the trash…?

11-19-2016-016

Some more southern spelling. This one in a flea market:

11-19-2016-022

This next one is most likely a case of an oppossum getting stuck in a plastic bag, meandering out into the road and getting hit by a car. Either that or Wal Mart is selling fresh oppossum and I didn’t know about it! Please keep up with your plastic bags folks. Not that that will keep oppossums from getting run over by cars, but still…

11-19-2016-050

Finally, and yes I spend too much time in the Wal Mart, another indication of the religious soaked south. Nothing like advertising your religion, it does help us spot the weirdos 🙂

11-19-2016-015

That’s it till next time! I hope you enjoyed this version of Picture Day!

The End Of An Era

I know you will all be as disappointed as I am. (sarcasm!) Duck Dynasty is in its final season. Can I get a hell yeah? A praise be to Jeebus?! An “oh my gosh one more ignorant non-reality tv show bites the dust?!”

May knowledge and reason find its way to our networks. Amen.

This Never Happens To Me

But it just did.

I was driving my youngest son to school this morning, we were listening to a classic rock station WJLI out of Paducah Ky. The hosts of the morning show were having a Match Game contest, where you have to have the same answer, a match, to a certain question. The question was along the lines of: With a celebrity winning the presidential bid in 2016, what odd celebrity possibilities could we have in 2020?

There were two CD box sets up for grabs a new Pink Floyd release I think Freudian Slip, and a Led Zeppelin remastered box set of which I’m not sure the name. There are two morning hosts and whoever matched one guy got the Pink Floyd, and whoever matched the other guy got the Zeppelin. This was a text in game and they were having fun with a lot of the text ins, and someone got a win for the Pink Floyd set with Peewee Herman. With the Zeppelin set still up for grabs someone sent in Captain Kangaroo (A host of a childrens show way back when) and one of the radio hosts said that was close, within the same decade anyway. On a whim, and I am ashamed for texting while driving, I sent in H.R. Pufnstuf. (another kids show from way back when I am also ashamed to say I watched a time or two) I won!

So, I’m about to head out on an hour+ drive to collect my Zeppelin box set. I got nuttin else to do today might as well bask in the limited glory of my unusual luck. But of course with my regular luck probably looking to settle the odds, I figure to have 3 flats and endure a zombie apocolypse before I can get home  🙂

EDIT: I’ve corrected the spelling from H.R. Puffinstuff to H.R. Pufnstuf. I had to Google it to explain it to one of my kids and discovered my spelling error. Also for your pleasure I have uploaded a pic of tht Pufnstuf himself. (That would be the goof in the outfit with the cowboy boots)

Adobe

I just updated my Adobe (Flash Player) and had Mcafee foisted upon me. I had no option to opt out of the Mcafee installation. There are lines that should not be crossed in internet land. This is one of those cases.

I mean it’s easy enough to uninstall but dammit I shouldn’t have too. I feel violated. Am I in the minority when I say that acts like this are criminal? As in, should be against the law?

EDIT:  I should have mentioned it was Adobe Flash Player. And I changed upgrading to the correct term updating.  Thank you Steve and NeuronNotes  🙂

I Mentioned At Some Point I Played Guitar…

I tried to upload this audio file here but it requires an upgrade. And I’m a cheap S.O.B. so I went searching for an online music database. I settled with Soundcloud and finally got around to uploading a music file. It took some doing, turns out I had to change a wma file to a wav file, so had to figure out how to do that. Which I discovered I could do exactly that with itunes, which I already have and did not need to dl anything. Just had to learn how to do it.

Ain’t the internet great?

So if you want to hear this you will need to click this link. I could not get this to play on Chrome, but I have HTML5 autoplay disabled. I very much dislike being hit with autoplay video everywhere I go. But it worked fine for me on IE. So, what I’m getting at I suppose is, if you have trouble getting it to play it is likely a browser issue.

I have a rough (absoluteley raw, no editing, no effects) song on a 16 track digital recorder I want to put up soon, as well as another track or two from my pro studio experience. Will get around to it as I can. Life is such that it is hard to take the time to hunt down all of the neccessities to get these kind of jobs done.

A little intro is appropriate I guess. I used to play with a band a while back and a few more before that that through the years. When my youngest son was born I had to retire from the music thing as babies are quite demanding of time. Anyway some years later my old buddy Brose who sings and plays bass on this song, called me up about doing some guitar work on some stuff he had going in a studio. I jumped at the opportunity and was able to record a couple of old songs I had lying around. Oh if you can’t abide classic rock or or southern rock don’t click! I swear I don’t try to have a southern rock flavor, that’s just what comes out.

Well, I did not know that posting the link would do that. 🙂 But I’ll take what I can get, especially if it works. I uploaded that song a short time ago and already have 2 followers and 7 plays lol. (that third follower got me right after I made the account a month or two ago)

So Are You Vaping?

If you are I suggest you read this:

https://www.dri.edu/newsroom/news-releases/5437-hazardous-chemicals-discovered-in-flavored-e-cigarette-vapor

Long story short the aerosols in vape juice contain, and I quote “dangerous levels of hazardous chemicals known to cause cancer in humans.”  Another quote: “One puff of any of the flavored e-liquids that we tested exposes the smoker to unacceptably dangerous levels of these aldehydes, most of which originates from thermal decomposition of the flavoring compounds.”

The breakdown of the vape juice during the rapid heating process creates these aldehydes. (think formaldehyde) From the story it looks to me like they did a respectable scientific study. Being an ex cigarette smoker I have to wonder how many people will respond with the old line “we gotta die from something!”

Vaping is as bad as regular old tobacco folks. Maybe worse. What makes this even more troublesome is the fact that a lot of kids are vaping these days. One of my boys went through a phase, I’m glad he walked away from it. I like to think my influence helped him do so. I kept telling him “you don’t know what the hell you are putting into your lungs, this stuff is too new and no testing has been done.” Well the tests are in.

I’d like to think my influence might help someone else walk away from this habit too. Let’s all just die of old age instead of tobacco/chemical caused cancers and breathing problems such as COPD. Or from the nukes fired at us because of Trump…   😉

Are You Kidding Me? They Elected The Great Orange Pumpkinhead?

I do hereby disassociate myself from the segment of society (morons) that would vote Trump into the White House. I really want to say fuck Trump and fuck the idiots that voted for him. But that would take a while apparently.

I went to bed early last night. I saw the trend, I am sick to my stomach. I am a tad depressed. I am feeling like my dog died. This is an enormous tragedy for our country. A tragedy for the the people. A tragedy for the entire world.

All I can think right now is if there is a wall built, I want to be on the other side of it.
