A reactor that can turn greenhouse gasses into liquid fuels? Well, we should be trying to wean ourselves off of any type of fuel that creates greenhouse gasses, but if you just got to have fuel, this would be the way to get it.
Just so y’all (I can say that I live in the south) know I ain’t dead yet, this post might mitigate any assumptions. Hope you are are all doing well and survivng the daily misery of our lovely government as best you can. Is it over yet? I’m trying not to look anymore…

Hey shell…fellow dead person here! 🙂 Interesting stuff. I guess the question is, how much energy does the converter itself use? But this is a start, and it’s typical once something has been developed for it to get more efficient in time. I also noted the many Chinese scientists that are working on this. I hope they do steal the technology and take it back to China. 🙂 Also on the project is a scientist from King Abdullah university in Saudi Arabia. I while ago now, I went to a talk by some Shell executive and I got the distinct impression that one of the big reasons fossil fuel companies are trying to suppress renewable energy has more to do with them wanting to be leaders in technology that will make fuel more efficient or even in the renewable markets themselves. It almost seems like corporations are using their resources to suppress other companies from developing technology and then investing more money in R&D. It would be interesting to see where the funding is coming for this project. In the end I don’t really care who solves energy problem, but the corporate entity is unscrupulous and I do feel that in this case competition would not be as useful as collaboration in making this technology available faster.

I wondered when I posted that if some corporate entity might swoop in and buy up the technology, which isn’t exactly unheard of. I would, like you, hope something this substantial would just be jumped on by everyone and brought to production ASAP.
But I often hope for things in humanity that are rarely seen anymore. My honest conclusion about climate change and our ability to check it, if we would just start, is that we are screwed. Those in power will squeeze out every damn dollar they can right up until the last dollar self ignites in their hands.
Greed is our undoing. Stupid is greeds best friend.

Yeah I’ve pretty much reached the same conclusion about climate change. I can only hope for some technological break through that will either change the energy game completely, or a similar breakthrough to do recapture carbon in the atmosphere. The latter is actually already at the early stages, and it would seem we are quite far from making that technology useful, especially considering that carbon release in the atmosphere is only going to get worse as poorer countries start getting more economically active, and China is rapidly getting more urban. I think greed can again be considered the problem for why fossil fuel companies continue to win the day.

You know Swarn, after thinking on your reply here for a bit, I have to say that coming from a guy with your credentials, reaching the same conclusion as me, is a little unnerving.
I half expected some sort of sunshiney view, a ray of hope, a bit of optimism, and your informed assessment relying on some forlorn hope of some new tech saving us all, concerns me.
Yeah its easy to sit here as an old grumpy bastard and make a bold statement about climate change, and how the greedy corruption that runs society will inevitably be the demise of us all. It is another thing entirely to have a guy whose training in climate science agrees with that assesment.
Today I feel a little bit more screwed than I did yesterday.

Hey SD…definitely didn’t mean to bring you down, but do remember I’m not an expert on politics, just atmospheric science.
Ultimately the problem we face here with climate change is that it is a global problem, and requires global coordination to combat it. We have wealthy countries who aren’t willing to make enough sacrifices to curb their emissions, and many of the richest countries aren’t willing to put in the money that it takes to help developing economies grow cleaner and avoid the environmentally dirty path that we took to build our economy. The burning of the rain forests are a great example. Despite the hype this is nothing new and not even as large an area of fires that have existed previously. It’s actually great that we are so concerned about it now, but there was a time where very few people cared. And we have done no less in many areas to build our economy, so why should Brazil act any differently? The interconnectedness of economies has already led to some facet of global governance, and the EU represents a microcosm of that possibility, but the trend now is a huge nationalistic push back in many wealthier nations and it was powerful enough here in the U.S. to elect Trump, who is by far the worst candidate to ever run for the Republican party. The international law infrastructure is so far out of place to be able to deal with climate change, that I don’t see how it’s going to get there in time to do something about the problem. I think that with climate change aside, at some point in humanity’s future we might reach a point of global governance. I would say that is trend given how small political regions were in the past and how they’ve grown with time. But climate change isn’t going to wait for humanity to get its act together. The idea of sustainability is crucial to saving the planet and it is catching on, but it is incompatible with capitalism and the richest and most powerful people are the best equipped to mislead people about what’s in their best interests.
The only good news is that the smartest people are trying to work on solutions to the problem. The idea that their might be a technological breakthrough to save our asses isn’t a far fetched one…it’s just that simply I don’t see that breakthrough technology anywhere on the horizon so it’s difficult for me to be firmly hopeful. But I do take solace that there are many brilliant people trying their best to save the Earth. So prepare for the worst, hope for the best. I guess that’s about all we can do right now. You and I will still have comfortable lives…our kids will face some big challenges. I know from your posts you have raised them well…let’s hope I can do the same!

This ^^^^^^^^ is the biggest obstacle we face. 1. Saving the planet is counterproductive to making a profit. 2. Those who love their profits will do whatever it takes to maintain the status quo (making more $$.) 3. These same people will also do whatever it takes, including deceiving, obfuscating, or outright lying to the public to protect their interests. And 4. The people who follow the dissemimators of misleading information (Faux News, Radical Right Wing whatevers on You Tube/Radio,) are all far too willing to believe whatever they are told.

I have been a prepare for the worst, hope for the best kind of guy for as long as I can remember. I may have to up my game a little though, I’m not sure I am prepared for the worst climate disaster in the history of mankind. That might take some work.
