All the worst you can imagine.
I used to love Saturday morning cartoons. Back then the anvil could still hit the coyote, Popeye could give someone a good ass whuppin, Elmer Fudd could hunt wabbits with a shotgun, and Bugs was a crossdresser.
It was great! I wish I could still see those old cartoons now deemed “harmul to children.” I believe the cartoon police went a little too far with deeming the classic cartoons as “violent.” Shit man, watch the evening news if you want violent. Go to the movies if you want violent. Say hello to a cop while being the wrong color if you want violent. Those old cartoons are classic. An anvil landing on the coyote does not a violent child make.
As far as that goes, violence is pretty much baked into our existence, we are a violent species. The cartoons didn’t have anything to do with it…
I also watched a lot of Gilligans Island. Gilligan was on, right arount the time I got home from school. Hogans Heroes was on after supper, I remember watching that one too.
On Friday nights where I lived, we had a late night show called “Accri’s Creature Feature.” Accri was an aluminum siding company that sponsored the show. The Creature Feature had all of those old corny sci-fi monster movies we used to love to hate.*
When I got a little older I’d watch some Johnny Carson, and Saturday Night Live. Both TV show Icons. Both still running today.
So, what did you watch?
*Strangely enough I still enjoy those same movies on MST 3000. If you don’t know what Mystery Science Theater is, google it. Get your head straight right before you watch it 😉 FYI, Pluto (free TV!!) has its very own MST 3000 channel! I love me some MST 3000.
MST 3000 is still pretty funny even if you don’t umm, enjoy a little evening buzz.
Great post! I can totally relate to missing those old cartoons and feeling like the cartoon police went a bit too far. It’s interesting how violence is ingrained in our existence as a species. As for me, I also grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons and shows like Gilligan’s Island and Hogan’s Heroes. But I’m curious, what other TV shows did you watch as a kid?

First, welcome aboard!
Umm, wow, making me put on my ole thinking cap here. I remember Jonny Quest, The Herculoids, Underdog, Secret Squirrel, Quick Draw McGraw, Scooby Doo, to name a few.
TV shows, I remember MASH, Love Boat, Columbo, Kojack, Emergency, Dragnet, and my memory gears are smoking right about now.
What shows do you remember?

Hardly watched any TV as a child and if there was any it was by accident. You see, I grew up without a television and there was no neighbour I recall who had one. So I grew up listening to radio and who remembers radio shows?
I don’t know whether humans are violent. Or that violence is baked into our existence. I think humans have a capacity for violence but that is it. That our cities are violent or have been violent can actually be laid at the door of men and a few women who organized armies for whatever reason. It is these stories that have been amplified to look like we are a violent species. Or maybe I am mistaken.

Well a capacity for violence is one thing, the willingness to use it is another, but we apparently cannot get away from it.
I can’t remember a time in my life, once old enough to understand what’s going on in the world, where violence wasn’t a daily occurence. Sometimes on a massive scale, for years at a time.
I’m pretty sure cartoons weren’t the cause…

Oddly enough I had to approve your comment again, and your name shows up as Someone, also no pic.
Last time that happened, it had Mak’s pic there, so I approved it then. This time no pic.
I’m assuming this is you Mak, I do not know for sure…

DANG! My comment is also missing … what’s going on? Most likely WP is making decision for us again.

I see this comment. Did I miss one?

No … I guess it was just slow in showing up. Maybe WP is tired today.

Very weird. If I “reply” via the email option, it shows my name and gravatar, but it I reply via your website … I’m “anonymous.” Also, I’m unable to “Like” any comments.

Wow, that’s strange alright. I see another comment by Someone with no gravatar, I assume it’s you this time. And again, I have to approve it. Which I will in a sec.
A few days back I had a “Someone” with Maks gravatar… So I assumed it was Mak.
I best quit assuming.

As I’ve aged, many, many “younger day” memories have faded. In fact, nowadays, remembering what I did 5 minutes ago can sometimes be a strain.
I do agree with many of your choices … altho’ I didn’t like Hogan’s Heroes. I religiously watched I Dream of Jeannie, The X-Files, Ed Sullivan Show, Gilligan’s Island, I Love Lucy, Lassie …
Now I don’t watch any series-type programs … and I avoid the news shows. Mostly I watch movies on Netflix, Prime, and Tubi.
Interesting how our habits change over the years, isn’t it?

Yes it is. I’m a big fan Prime and Tubi, as well as Pluto.

I just “logged in” to your blog. Let’s see what happens. WP is great, but the “developers” can’t seem to leave well enough alone. Earning their salary, I suppose.

Let’s see if WP recognizes me. It did force me to log in again.
I did watch all the classic sitcom reruns, especially The Addams Family, Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. My sister was a big Brady Bunch fan. But my big childhood staple was Star Trek. First, when it originally came out, I watched it with my dad when I was very small. Then endless reruns, which were the only decent afterschool programming available for years. I put up with the animated Star Trek, which had some good writing and terrible art quality, but it never lived up to the original.
