I can live with that I suppose, but anyone with a knack for spotting bullshit arguments probably didn’t need scientific evidence to show this idea was wrong. What idea is that? That the earth, the sun, our solar system would be the center of the universe of course. That argument fostered by the religious wingnuts who believe everything in their little black book is true despite any good evidence to the contrary.
The money quote from the article: “Dartmouth researchers found that this model* can’t hold up to other observational tests. The sky glows with light left over from the Big Bang, also known as the Cosmic Microwave Background, so they calculated how that glow would be affected. Their findings show that the model’s prediction is completely contrary to the glow that has been measured.” The article goes on with: “Essentially, we held a mirror up to the universe and asked if the reflection was special,” says Robert Caldwell, a professor of physics and astronomy who co-wrote the article with undergraduate physics major Nina Maksimova. “The reflection shows that we do not appear to live in a special location, and decisively excludes this** explanation for the universe’s accelerating expansion. It would be a great relief to be able to understand a basic problem of cosmology within the known laws of physics, but our research is an important step in explaining the physics responsible for the cosmic acceleration.” (and an unfortunate side effect being this result)
Well how about that? Another biblical literalist statement of fact slain with the sword of science. Those damn scientists with their damn facts just keep on dismantling the delusion one myth at a time. I predict the professional creationist spin doctors to begin with the howling in 3…2…1…and go!
*,** The “we are the center of the universe theory”, until this morning I just thought that was a wacky idea held by creationists, I did not know it was actually postulated as a cough, cough…theory.

I think as recently as a few years ago, there was a muslim cleric who maintained we live in a flat earth so the theory that we are at the centre of the universe is not so fringe at all

Indeed there are those who still insist that earth is flat (it isn’t), and the center of the universe (not even close, unless you consider that everywhere might be the center of the universe). There are those who believe the sky is held up on pillars (nope). They believe that demons in your nose make you sneeze (hence the term “bless you”), they believe disease and natural disasters are god’s work, and if you just pray hard enough you can be spared (plenty of dead people who’s loved ones didn’t pray good enough and there are always survivors of disasters who think that god saved them, and they couldn’t possibly just be a statistic). They think heaven is above us (I have personally been observing our near universe for several years with no detection of this particular place in the sky, perhaps I need a bigger telescope) They believe in a perfect pair of created beings, whose offspring seeded the planet.(umm, sorry, modern genetics has proven that the smallest bottleneck of humans was never less that several thousand individuals) They believe species are static (nope), which means evolution is impossible (as of right now there is no competing theory with as much evidence to support it as the ToE) All this and more. It is astounding the lengths they can go to, to rationalize away all that might conflict with the things they have been lead to believe in.
After all of these years gone by, since the religious creeds were written, so many things they tried to explain, which sorta kinda made sense at the time, we now understand so much better. We have the tools for observation, the willingness to investigate, the means to find answers to the ways of the universe. The fact that these things we have more recently discovered directly contradict religious texts is an unfortunate consequence for the theists. For those for who desperately cling to faith, your foundations are cracked, and falling away. There is no need to continue with the fight. Science has won. You are just too damn dense to get it…there is no shame in accepting reality.
Thanks for stopping in Mak. I didn’t mean for this reply to turn into a semi-rant, it just happens sometimes 🙂
