More Evidence Of Religious Drug Addicts

Researchers at the University of Utah have done a study showing how the brain reacts to religious experiences. We have known for a while, or at least strongly suspected that the reward center in the brain becomes involved. Which means high doses of the natural feel good drug dopamine, manufactured by our own bodies becomes activated, accumulates in our reward center, and people experience euphoria, light headedness, and feelings of well being.

These researchers did the testing with fMRI imaging and subjected the participants to religious influences, and monitored the results. The reward center of the brain lit up like a Christmas tree in Times Square.

Damn despicable drug addicts! All of them!

  2. I’ll keep my present addiction to heroin, thank you very much. Religion is far scarier and more damaging. 🙂

  3. Hardly surprising. I would expect the results to be the same for many beliefs, not just about religion. Whether it was a strong belief in conspiracy theories, ultra-nationalism, aliens. The dopamine release is high when beliefs are reinforced and it’s definitely pleasure for the brain. But definitely when you watch those pentacostals waving their hands and going crazy with the spirit of Jesus, the first thing that comes to mind is that these people are high as fuck! lol

    • Great point Swarn. All of our brains work similarly and respond to external inputs with predictable reactions.

The dopamine release can hook you on just about anything really. But religion learned a long time ago to tap into that little part of our humanity and cash in on it.

Pentacostals are a certain kind of crazy for sure. They abound here. You see a lot of denim skirts in town. I actually went to a Pentacostal church once. Never went back 🙂

      • Denim skirts? What does that mean? I am clearly not up on my lingo. lol

I would say people learned how to use religion to tap into human vulnerabilities. I honestly that there is some goodness at the heart of the inspiration for a lot of the religions that have come and gone, but they evolve, and well it’s a quick ride to using it control the masses. Anything can be exploited, even science, the only difference is science must stand up to testing, religion has found a way to skirt that, thanks to a fun word called faith. lol

        • Denim skirts (long, of course … to cover the ankles) are a common type of attire for the extreme fundamentalist sects (most generally, hard-core Pentecostal).

They take very seriously the scripture in 1 TImothy 2:9: … the women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing, not with their hair braided or with gold, pearls, or expensive clothes (NRSV)

          Also no makeup.

Oh, and they must let their hair grow (Paul’s exhortation in 1 Corinthians 11:15): But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her. (KJV)

        • You need to take ride, come visit the south sir. You will find we have many ways about us. (This next bit is best if read it as you would hear Foghorn Leghorn speaking it) “One abeeun the Pentecostals wayuh theyuh denim skuts as a form of modesty. They keep they hayuh straight and plain as not to offend the menfolk or the gods.”

It took me a long time to figure out what the hell was going on after I moved here 🙂 I just thought denim skirts were popular with homely chicks lol.

Theres that fun word again 😉 Faith. I guess it’s fun if you need to hide behind it?
